Expedition Cruise Video Production — Submarine, Polar & Arctic Campaigns
Who We Serve
Expedition Brands
WABU Creative is an expedition cruise video production company built for brands filming in the world's most demanding environments: Alaska, Antarctica, the Arctic, the Kimberley, and aboard the submersibles, zodiacs, and polar-class vessels that define the category. Our crews are Advanced Wilderness First Aid certified, and we've filmed aboard IAATO-member vessels in Antarctica and AECO-member vessels in the Arctic. Cruise brands including Seabourn, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line hire us for work their in-house teams can't deliver. This case study covers one of those projects: a submarine launch shot at a tropical training facility, then the same system carried into polar waters.
The Mission
Seabourn invested in two $500M expedition ships to accelerate growth in the ultra-luxury space.
But as the brand prepared for the inaugural sailing, the brand faced a gap: there was no submarine content to support the launch.
Seabourn needed to generate demand for submarines in destinations their ships hadn’t reached yet, creating an expedition marketing challenge with immediate commercial impact.
The Insight
Shoot the submarines at the training facility for tropical content prior to the launch. Shoot the polar footage on the Arctic inaugural and build a marketing operating system that scales across destinations.

Submarine Expedition Production FAQ
If you’re accountable for outcomes, not just output, you’re in the right place.
What production companies specialize in expedition cruise video production?
Only a handful of production companies focus specifically on expedition cruise work — the combination of cinematic production values, multi-week logistics, and operational experience aboard polar-class vessels narrows the field considerably. WABU Creative is one of them. We produce campaign content for brands filming in Antarctica, Alaska, the Arctic, the Kimberley, and aboard submersibles, zodiacs, and polar-class vessels, with work for cruise clients including Seabourn, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line.
What makes expedition cruise video production different from traditional cruise or travel video?
Three things: environment, logistics, and regulation. Expedition shoots happen in polar or remote settings where weather can cancel a shoot day, wildlife sets its own schedule, and medical evacuation is hours or days away. Logistics involve multi-crew, multi-week deployments aboard working expedition vessels — not hotel-based travel production. And regulation matters: IAATO governs Antarctica and AECO governs the Arctic. Crews that don't understand these frameworks create compliance risk for the operator.
How do I hire a video crew to film aboard an expedition cruise ship?
Most cruise brands embed a production crew under their own operator permissions for a specific voyage. The process typically starts two to nine months ahead: define the campaign objective, confirm itinerary and cabin availability for crew, align on rights and deliverables, and submit crew details to the ship's expedition leader. WABU manages this end-to-end for brand clients, including pre-voyage briefings, gear manifests, and onboard coordination with the expedition team.
What credentials should a video production crew have for polar expedition shoots?
At minimum: wilderness medical training, cold-weather operational experience, and documented familiarity with IAATO (Antarctica) and AECO (Arctic) visitor guidelines. WABU's crews are Advanced Wilderness First Aid (AWFA) certified, and we've filmed aboard IAATO-member vessels in Antarctica and polar-class vessels across the Arctic. Crews without wilderness medical certification shouldn't be shooting multi-day voyages in remote waters.
How do you film a submarine or submersible at sea?
Filming submersibles requires coordinating three production windows: surface-level shots of the submarine launch and recovery from the mothership, interior shots of guests boarding, and underwater footage of the submersible operating at depth. Each requires different rigs, different approvals, and tight synchronization with the submersible pilot and the expedition team. Our submarine case study documents one such project — a submersible launch shot at a tropical training facility, with the same system carried into polar waters.
How much does expedition cruise video production cost?
For a fully produced expedition cruise campaign — hero film, supporting cuts, and photo library — most projects fall in the six-figure range, driven primarily by voyage length, crew size, and deliverable count. Multi-week polar deployments cost more than seven-day itineraries because of crew day rates, polar-rated gear, and insurance. A shorter test shoot or single-asset project can start lower; a full inaugural-voyage campaign for a new ship can run significantly higher. Contact us for a scoped estimate based on your itinerary and campaign goals.
What's different about filming on polar-class vessels?
Polar-class vessels (PC5, PC6, PC7 ratings) are built to operate in ice-covered waters, which shapes what you can shoot and how. Deck access during ice navigation is restricted, hull vibration affects long-lens work, and zodiac operations require certified operators and waiver coordination. Natural light windows are narrow in polar winter and extended in polar summer — both require shot planning that a production company unfamiliar with these vessels won't anticipate.
How far in advance should a cruise brand book a video production crew for an inaugural voyage?
For an inaugural voyage campaign, we recommend engaging a production partner nine to twelve months before float-out. Booking later than six months typically means settling for whatever crew has availability rather than who's best for the shoot. Specialist crews for polar itineraries get reserved for entire seasons, not single voyages — the competitive constraint is crew availability, not production capacity.
Who produces video for cruise brands like Seabourn, Princess, and Holland America Line?
Major cruise brands typically use a mix of in-house teams, agency-of-record relationships, and project-based specialists for expedition or extreme-environment work. WABU Creative has produced video and photo content for Adobe, Seabourn, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line in contexts their primary partners weren't equipped to deliver — submersible launches, polar itineraries, and multi-week expedition coverage.
Can a production company film in Antarctica?
Yes, but only under specific conditions. Commercial filming in Antarctica happens either under a national Antarctic program permit or aboard an IAATO-member operator's voyage, filming under that operator's permissions and guidelines. WABU's Antarctic work is conducted aboard IAATO-member vessels, with crews briefed on IAATO visitor site guidelines before embarkation.
What wildlife and environmental protocols do you follow in polar regions?
We operate under the visitor guidelines set by IAATO in Antarctica and AECO in the Arctic, reinforced by the expedition team of the specific vessel. Minimum distances from wildlife, landing site rotation, biosecurity protocols for footwear and gear, and restrictions on drone use are all governed by these frameworks. Our crews are briefed pre-voyage and follow the expedition leader's direction in-field.
How do you measure the performance of expedition cruise campaigns?
Performance measurement depends on campaign objective: awareness campaigns track reach, engagement, and view-to-completion; direct-response campaigns track booking lift, cost-per-booking, and attribution windows. We work with brand teams to define KPIs before the shoot so production and post decisions serve the measurement plan, not the other way around. Hero content typically drives top-of-funnel; submersible, wildlife, and expedition-team moments consistently drive stronger mid-funnel engagement than generic ship-lifestyle footage.
